1971 Hemi GTX - The rarest Hemi Plymouth hardtop in ‘70 & 71 / Only 32 made

It’s true! No other Plymouth hardtop Hemi car was rarer than this one was in 1970 or 71. Only 32 of these were ever built! Hemi GTX’s were built for five years starting with the ‘67 model. In that 5 year stretch only 1,470 Hemi GTX hardtops were built and in 1971, the last year for the Hemi GTX, there were only 32 made. There were 30 shipped in the US and two more went to Canada. This means that of the 1,470 Hemi GTX hardtops built in 5 years that only 2% of them were 1971 models. I find it pretty surprising that there are only two factory built Hemi “B” body cars in the whole world known to exist in Curious Yellow and this is one of those two cars. Knowing these two things and knowing how well this Hemi GTX was optioned out and that it still has its original numbers-matching factory installed Hemi and transmission as well as also having a matching buildsheet with paper work back to the original owner has got to make this one of the most significant Hemi cars that a person could possibly own.

This awesome Hemi GTX has only had a half dozen owners since it was bought new by Monte Baumgarten and its whole life story since then is known. The story goes like this: Monte Baumgarten was 21 years old and worked in the parts dept. at Cordell Motors, the local Plymouth dealership, and one weekend sometime in November he and his pal the parts manager went to see the new car auto show in town. It was there that Monte had seen a Curious Yellow ‘71 Road Runner that really impressed him. The following Monday he sat down with one of the salesmen at work and placed his order for a loaded out ‘71 Hemi GTX in none other than Curious Yellow. His employee discount amounted to getting the Hemi for free. Montes family owned a farm and he had paid for the GTX with money made from the sale of his cows. On Wednesday, January 6, 1971 (over 35 years ago ), Montes’ ‘71 Hemi GTX was delivered to Cordell Motors Inc. in Moorhead, Minnesota, a suburb of Fargo, North Dakota. Monte Baumgarten was from Durbin, ND just west of Fargo, maybe 10 miles, where he kept the GTX for almost 4 yrs before selling it on or about June 4, 1975 to Roger Neshem from Berthold, ND, some 270 miles WNW of Durbin. Roger only kept the car for about 8 weeks before selling it on or about August 8, 1975 to the Kevin Larson family of Mohall, ND, about 30 miles north of him. The Larson family owned it for almost 15 years when they sold it back to Roger Neshem on or about November 17, 1990. Roger kept the GTX for almost another 11 years before selling it to Greg Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota sometime during the summer of 2001.         Greg didn’t have the car very long before it was purchased in the early part of 2002 by Brian Eggenberg also from Minneapolis. Right up until the time when Brian bought the GTX from Greg it was still wearing all of its original paint. Brian wasn’t going to be satisfied with the still nice original paint that was less than perfect so he sent the car straight to the paint shop. The body on the GTX was just about near-perfect, having never been in any sort of accident and being almost completely rust free with the only exception being a little bit in the very bottom of each quarter panel and some in the bottom rear of the front fenders; that’s it !! All the sheet metal on this GTX is its original factory metal.

For whatever his reasons were, Brian decided to sell the car on the downhill side of the restoration process and I was fortunate enough to buy it from him in May, 2004. This was, by the way, the first time the car had ever gone more than 300 miles in any direction from where it was originally sold.

I've had every intention of getting this car completed and just haven’t been able to get to it, so I'm offering it for sale in its present condition in an attempt to go elsewhere with the money. At the beginning of description I mentioned that this Hemi GTX was optioned out pretty well. It was scheduled to be built on Monday, October 5, 1970 and the following is a list of options that were ordered on this fantastic ‘71 Hemi GTX followed by their price and the number of shipped GTX’s that were equipped with that particular option.

A34 - Super Track Pak $ 219.30 - 187 units

B41 - Brakes - Power disc (B51 is req) $ 24.45 - 1311 units

V1X - Full Vinyl Top $ 95.75 - 1508 units-all colors

W21 - Wheels 15x7 Rallyes $ 58.95 -1406 units

So, when you add the price of these 25 options to the base price of the 71 GTX of $3,707.00 you get a 71 Hemi GTX that costs $5,521.94. And this doesn’t include the destination charge or taxes. That’s $1,815.00 worth of options which is right at 50% of the cars base price. I’ll bet there aren’t many Mopars out there that are equipped with options that cost half again the base price of the entire car. With regards to the cars engine and transmission they have both been rebuilt. I have a detailed list of everything that was done by the machine shop to the Hemi including the computer print outs of 10 different dyno runs. The car is mostly complete with the exception of a Rim Blow steering wheel, Automatic trans cooler, Exhaust manifolds and the correct Distributor. I know that I could get into a lot more details here as to the condition of this GTX and its components, but hopefully the pictures will answer a lot of your questions. I've got plenty of additional pictures if you're interested.

If you're thinking that you might be a buyer on this GTX and it would help you to have a little time to get the funds raised, I would be OK with giving you as much as 45 days to get the balance paid off with an up front deposit of $30K. It would be very much appreciated if you would forward this email to anyone you think might have an interest in the car. For any questions you may have that I might not have covered you can reach Scott at (405) 203-4441.

Engine for sale: It has zero time on it, as it has not been completely assembled yet. This is a 451" stroker motor. This combo is a 400" Mopar block with a 440 steel crank, 440 rods and KB hypereutectic pistons. Compression ratio is 9.5:1 and the engine has been built with quench technology so it will run great on pump gas. My engineered horsepower design is 475 to 480 HP. The heads have been fully ported by me and the cam is one of my own "experienced" cams already broken in, so no worries about failure on startup. As seen in the following pictures, the parts required for this motor are: valve covers, valve gear, oil pan & pickup, timing cover, oil pump and intake manifold. The asking price as is: $4000.00. This is great value. If I were to build this engine today, the price would be considerably more.

The engine is located in Kelowna, BC. As for the parts required to complete this engine, I have all the necessary parts in stock (at reasonable cost, of course).
